About Health Insurance
Qualifying for a retirement benefit does not determine your eligibility for retiree health coverage or its cost.
Understanding Health Benefits
The Maryland State Retirement Agency does not administer or give advice about retiree health insurance.
The Maryland State Retirement Agency (MSRA) determines your retirement benefit and monthly allowance. Retiree health coverage, subsidies, and premiums are determined by the organization that administers your health benefits.
Before You Retire
Before making your final retirement decision, we strongly encourage you to confirm the following with the organization that administers your health benefits:
- Whether you qualify for a full, partial, or no employer health subsidy
- The estimated monthly cost of your medical, prescription, dental, and other elected coverage
- The cost of covering a spouse or other eligible dependents
- What forms or other actions are required to continue health coverage after retirement
IMPORTANT: If you are eligible to participate in the State Employees Health Insurance Program, you must select a dual-life annuity option (Options 2, 3, 5, or 6) and designate your spouse or other eligible dependent as the sole beneficiary under that option for them to be eligible for continuing health program coverage after your death.
Who Should I Contact?

Employees of Counties, Boards of Education, Municipalities, and Other Participating Employers
