General Questions

What is identity verification?

Identity verification is a process where we verify that you are truly you and not someone else attempting to access your account. It’s an extra layer of security to safeguard your sensitive information and prevent fraud and identity theft.

Why are you changing the identity verification process now?

Your security is our top priority. As online threats become more sophisticated, we’re continuously enhancing our security measures to protect your personal data and ensure only authorized individuals can access your secure member portal. This new process helps us meet the highest standards in data protection.

How does identity verification protect my information?

Identity verification adds a crucial layer of defense by confirming your identity with your government-issued ID and photo. This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access, account takeovers, and other fraudulent activities, ensuring your sensitive information remains private and secure.

The Registration / Identity Verification Process

What will I need to complete the identity verification process?

To verify your identity, you’ll typically need:

  • Your government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s license or state ID card). Work badges and employee IDs are not accepted
  • A smartphone with a camera for taking photos of your ID and a “selfie” to match your face to your ID. You’ll also need it so you can receive a one-time verification code (SMS/text message or voice call).
  • Your Social Security Number (SSN) or other relevant personal information for data verification.

How long will the identity verification process take?

The online identity verification process is designed to be quick and efficient, often taking only 5 to 10 minutes to complete if you have all your documents ready.

What are the steps for online identity verification?

While the exact steps may vary slightly, generally you will:

  1. Go to the mySRPS home page and click “Register.” You’ll be prompted to start the identity verification process.
  2. Enter Verifying information, such as your last name, last four digits of your Social Security number and date of birth, for cross-referencing with secure databases.
  3. Take photos of your government-issued ID (front and back) using your device’s camera. Ensure the photos are clear, well-lit, and show the entire document.
  4. Take a “selfie” photo of yourself. Our system will compare this photo to the one on your ID to confirm your identity.
  5. Review and submit your information.

What if I don’t have a smartphone or a camera on my computer?

If you are unable to complete the online process, please contact our Member Services team. We can provide alternative methods for identity verification, such as in-person verification.

What if my ID photos are blurry or not accepted?

Our system requires clear images to accurately verify your identity. If your photos are rejected, please ensure:

  • Your ID is on a flat surface with a solid, dark background.
  • There’s no glare or shadows on the ID.
  • The entire document is visible and not cut off.
  • You are taking the picture directly from above, not at an angle.

You will be given the opportunity to retake the photos.

I submitted a request for a registration code – will I be able to register using the code?

Our agency has introduced a new and improved registration process as part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining the security of your account and personal information. As a result, a registration code is no longer required to begin the process.

Troubleshooting and Support

What happens if my identity cannot be verified online?

If the online process cannot verify your identity, you may be given options such as:

  • Trying again after a short waiting period (e.g., 48 hours).
  • Verifying your identity in person at the Maryland State Retirement Agency, located at 120 East Baltimore Street.
  • Contacting our Member Services team for assistance and alternative verification methods.

Will I have to complete identity verification process every time I log in?

No. Once your identity is successfully proofed, this verification is generally good for the life of your member account. You will not need to repeat the full identity verification process for every login. However, for future logins, you may still be required to complete a multi-factor authentication step (e.g., entering a code sent to your phone) for enhanced security.

What if I forget my username or password after completing the identity verification process?

If you forget your username or password, you will be able to reset your credentials by answering the security questions you set up during registration. This helps ensure that only you can regain access to your account. You will not be required to complete the identity verification process again.

Who may I contact if I have issues or questions during the identity verification process? Our Member Services team is here to help!
