2013 Employees’ System Trustee Election

Article

Beginning on May 14, 2013, eligible members and retirees of the Employees’ Systems (Correctional Officers’ Retirement System, Employees’ Retirement System, Employees’ Pension System, Judges’ Retirement System, the Legislative Pension Plan, the Local Fire and Police System, and the Law Enforcement Officers’ Pension System) will have the opportunity to cast their votes in the 2013 Employees’ Systems Trustee Election. This election will utilize the State Retirement Agency’s electronic voting process. Electronic voting allows members and retirees to cast their votes either through an Interactive Telephone Response System or through the Internet. This system alleviates many of the issues associated with traditional paper ballots, while providing you with a secure, accurate method for casting your vote.

In this election, two active Employees’ Systems candidates are vying for a seat on the Board of Trustees of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System. The successful candidate will serve a four year term on the Board beginning on August 1, 2013.

The Board of Trustees would like to emphasize the importance of exercising your right to vote in this election. Members and retirees of the Employees’ Systems have the right to select the candidate who will represent them on the Board. As a Board member, this candidate will help to shape policies that affect both active members and retirees alike.

In addition to administering the survivor, disability, and retirement benefits of the System’s participants, the Board of Trustees of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System directs the management of a multi-billion dollar investment portfolio, monitors the investment performance of the total trust fund, approves all disability retirements, and adopts rules, regulations, policies, and procedures necessary to administer the various plans. The Board plays a critical role in ensuring the security of your benefits, both now and in the future.

We ask that all eligible members and retirees take a moment to cast your vote. Your vote will help to determine who represents your interests on the Board of Trustees.

Election notification letters will be mailed during the week of May 13, 2013 and will contain voting instructions, candidate biographies, and a secure pin number which will allow you to cast your vote either through an Interactive Telephone Response System or through the Internet. Voting begins May 14, 2013.
