Maryland State Retirement and Pension System Seeks Nominees to Serve as a Public Advisor to the Investment Committee

BALTIMORE, MD — The Board of Trustees of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (SRPS) is seeking nominations for a member of the public to serve as an unpaid advisor to its Investment Committee for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2026. The term of the incumbent public advisor is due to expire on June 30, 2026. The committee meets at least four times each year, typically in person at SRPS offices.

State law requires that three non-board members who meet the following criteria serve as advisors to the Board’s Investment Committee:

  • nominee is not a member, retiree, or beneficiary under any of the several state retirements systems;
  • nominee has had experience in the management and control of large investments; and
  • nominee has at least 10 years of substantial experience as any one or a combination of the following:
  1. A portfolio manager acting in a fiduciary capacity;
  2. An employee or principal of a trust institution, investment organization, or endowment fund acting either in a management-related or an investment-related capacity;
  3. A chartered financial analyst in good standing; or
  4. A professional engaged in a public or private financial or investment field that is comparable to the fields listed above.

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is charged with the fiduciary responsibility for properly administering the retirement and pension allowances of more than 177,000 retirees and beneficiaries as well as the future benefits for more than 250,000 active and former members. These groups include state government employees, teachers, law enforcement personnel, legislators, judges and local government employees and fire fighters whose employers have elected to participate in the system.
